Tag It Tuesday! Honoring Our Veterans

Friday marks the annual observance of Veterans Day, a day on which we honor the millions of brave men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.  This Tag It Tuesday, in tribute to our military veterans, we’re asking you to tag records in the Online Public Access (OPA) that relate to veterans and the military.   Help us tag our veteran-related records all week long.

Among the records available online that relate to the observance of Veterans Day is a digital copy of the act that officially changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day:

Act of June 1, 1954, Public Law 83-380, 68 STAT 168, to honor veterans on the 11th day of November of each year, a day dedicated to world peace, 06/01/1954 - 06/01/1954 (NAI 5716504)

There are plenty of digitized images featuring veterans including:

Photograph of Union and Confederate Veterans Shaking Hands Across the Stone Wall at the 1938 "Blue and Gray Reunion" at Gettysburg, 1938 (NAI 4529731)

Cheering U.S. veterans of the China-Burma-India campaigns arrive in New York September 27, 1945, aboard the Army transport General A. W. Greely. The men and women were members of the Flying Tigers, Merrill's Marauders, and other heroic outfits. International News Photos., 1942 - 1945 (NAI 535524)

We want to remember the women who served too, including those who served in the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARs) and the U.S. Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve) also known as “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service” (WAVES).  Check out some of the digitized records that are available like these two recruitment posters:

    1. Hi John,

Thanks for catching my mistake! I had WACs on the brain and merged the two! I’ve corrected WAVEs to be what they really were – “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service”.
