1940 Census Update for April 4th

Yesterday we made additional updates to the 1940 census site to correct issues with printing and downloading.  I am please to write that researchers are able to search, view, browse, print, and download images as of midnight on April 4th.

Demand on the site was almost three times higher yesterday morning than on April 2nd and we maintained the site performance throughout the day.

We share your frustrations with searching for the 1940 census during the last couple of days and appreciate your patience as we have worked with Archives.com to improve site performance.

I will continue to post updates for you here on NARAtions.

  1. Just in case you’re tired of hearing nothing but complaints – thank you! It has been so moving to find my dad and grandparents in the Census and to learn more about them. I really, really appreciate all the hard work you’re doing to make these images available. It’s even more amazing that I can view them on my laptop here in New Zealand 72 years later. Thank you again!

  2. I was surprised at the NARA Fair on Wednesday when a patron tried to print the 1940 Census in the Library and was unable to do so. The staff in the microfilm room told me that you are unable to print this census at NARA. Is this going to be fixed soon?
    Thanks!
