Way back in October, we announced that the National Archives was uploading several sets of our Mathew Brady photos onto Flickr.  These original sets were not in any particular order, and were just a selection of the thousands of photographs that Mathew Brady took that now live at the National Archives.  Also in that original post, we received lots of great feedback from you on how we should organize these images, and the benefits of geotagging the images.

Thanks to your suggestions, we have created over 40 topical sets for these images, including Civil War Entrenchments and Defenses, Lincoln’s Cabinet, and Union and Confederate Generals.  Most major battles are represented in the sets, as well as Women of the Civil War.  Additionally, we have gone through and geotagged most of the images as accurately as we could.  The possibilities for using these sets for research, education, and just plain perusal are endless!

Only about half of all our Mathew Brady images are on Flickr at this time. Our Mathew Brady sets will be changing as we continue to add new images (this is also the reason some sets are not as full as others). Take a look at the collection, and let us know what you think!

  1. Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with what appears to be a glass negative of Ulysses S. Grant that my mom bought at an auction several years ago.

I have no idea if it is original, or a fake. I do have pictures of the glass piece. Thanks so much!!

    1. Hi Heather,

We don’t do appraisals at the National Archives, but we can definitely point you in the right direction. We usually refer people to the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (they can help you with more than books, even though “booksellers” is part of their name). They’re based in New York, but will you get in touch with someone local to you who can help with an appraisal.

Good luck – your find sounds absolutely fascinating.

      – Katherine

  2. I am searching for my grandfather’s regimental photo: Co. H, Eighth Cavalry Regiment of Iowa. Perhaps the Archives might have such a photo?Thank you. Same name as mine.

    1. Hi George,

It would be extremely rare for any Civil War regiment or company to have a formal or official photograph; Matthew Brady of course took many informal shots of military units, usually in a camp setting or at muster, but the chances of finding something for a specifc regiment is probably very small. NARA’s collection of Matthew Brady photographs has been digitized and is available on the Fold3 web site (www.fold3.com). Other options might be to contact the State Historical Society of Iowa (www.iowahistory.org), which also operates the State Archives; or the State Library of Iowa (www.silo.lib.ia.us/). Both organizations should have photograph collections that might include regimental images. Check the Library of Congress (www.log.gov) as well for additional Matthew Brady material.
